Shooting film in the bright bright sun

I dedicate this post to Sara Gray who is my running partner and had to listen to me raving about these images specifically ;)

What do all these images have in common? Yes, they were all taken at the Film is not Dead workshop, they are all modeling for engagement style pictures, and they were all shot on film and developed at Richard's. What floored me about these images is that they are all shot at like 4pm in the summer! The sun is almost the worst it can get and we are using the sky as the background!!! When we were shooting these, I was really just getting used to film and freaked out a little to shoot it. I was skeptical of the possible results because these are conditions I would NEVER shoot in using digital. I just wouldn't do it! I would find some shade or a wall or wait till the light gets better. On the last image I don't like how much of her face is in the sun light, but the picture isn't ruined like it would be with digital. This is amazing!! The colors are soft and pastel and it's just beautiful. These are all straight out of camera!

  1. You're right - these are so pretty; especially the blue & yellow beautiful summer colors - my fave is the 4th one where the sun is coming in between them and hitting his shoulder.

  2. The lighting really makes a huge difference in the way the film looks. Living in Southern LA, we have so much sun and it's just glaring. But I loved that I was able to shoot, bright sun, no worries about the highlights. I think all of these are beautiful. I know you are learning film, but you are really a wonderful photographer! :) Thanks for sharing
