This was a study I did with Polly as my model using off camera lighting. In the first image, I am one huge steps away from Polly (very scientific measurements) and had the flash on my camera set to +0 and the off camera flash is set to +1 (you can see in resting on a garbage can later, like I said, very scientific). In the second image, I am two huge steps away and in the third image, I am three huge steps away. The reason I did this was to observe the differences in the flash with the true black and white film using auto settings to find out what I can count on at a wedding. I was thinking that probably my direct flash wouldn't look that different in the each image because it was set to +0 and my camera can tell my flash what my settings are and tell the flash how far away the subject is based on my lenses focal distance (camera's are very smart these days). I also anticipated that my off camera flash would be stronger in comparison when I got farther away because it thinks that it is the same distance as the camera (not nearly as smart) and you can see that is exactly what happened! The rim light in the last image is a lot stronger than in the first because I am so much farther away but the external light isn't changing the distance at all.
